Pronouns for Contrast
In Serbian, clitic pronouns (me, te, ga, mi...) are the neutral default. Whenever you need to emphasize a pronoun or contrast one person with another, you must switch to the full, stressed form (mene, tebe, njega, meni...).
How It Works
Serbian personal pronouns distinguish unstressed clitic forms from stressed full forms in three oblique cases (Genitive, Dative, and Accusative; the other oblique cases, Instrumental and Locative, have only full forms):
- Enclitic (short) forms: Unstressed, prosodically bound forms placed in the second syntactic position:
- Dative: ми, ти, му, јој, нам, вам, им
- Genitive: ме, те, га, је, нас, вас, их
- Accusative: ме, те, га, је/ју, нас, вас, их (where ју is strictly accusative, used primarily directly before the auxiliary је to prevent the cacophonic repetition је је).
- Full (stressed) forms: Independent forms carrying lexical stress that behave syntactically like full noun phrases:
- Dative: мени, теби, њему, њој, нама, вама, њима
- Genitive: мене, тебе, њега, ње, нас, вас, њих
- Accusative: мене, тебе, њега, њу, нас, вас, њих (noting that feminine Genitive ње contrasts with Accusative њу).
Note that while the singular and third-person plural pronouns feature distinct morphological stems between their long and short variants, the first- and second-person plural forms in the Genitive and Accusative (нас, вас) share the exact same segmental spelling; their distinction is purely suprasegmental (stressed full forms нâс, вâс carrying a long-falling accent versus unstressed enclitics нас, вас).
Because enclitics lack independent prosody, vocal emphasis cannot be placed on them. To contrast entities, coordinate alternatives, or isolate a participant (especially around conjunctions like а, него, већ, or а не), the full form is obligatory.
The Nominative Parallel:
Serbian is a null-subject (pro-drop) language. In the nominative case, the neutral baseline is zero (leaving out the pronoun). Therefore, explicitly inserting an overt subject pronoun (личне заменице у номинативу) serves the exact same contrastive function: Ја радим, а ти спаваш ('I work, while you sleep').
Syntax & Word Order:
Unlike short clitics which are locked into the clause's second position, full pronouns can freely open a sentence (e.g., Њега су позвали) or stand alone as complete elliptical answers (e.g., Кога тражиш? — Њега!).
Examples (5)
- Позвали су њега, а не њу.
They invited him, not her.
Word by Word: Invited they-have him, and not her.
Accusative contrastive focus. Using short forms (*га and ју/је) here is strictly ungrammatical.
- То сам рекао теби, а не њему.
I told that to you, not to him.
Word by Word: That am told to-you, and not to-him.
Dative contrastive focus using full indirect object pronouns (теби vs. њему).
- Није питао мене, него њих.
He didn't ask me, but rather them.
Word by Word: Not-has asked me, but-rather them.
Contrastive correction using the conjunction 'него' requires stressed accusative forms.
- Кога чекате овде? — Њега.
Who are you waiting for here? — Him.
Word by Word: Whom wait-you here? — Him.
Elliptical single-word replies cannot use enclitics; only full forms possess prosodic independence.
- Ја ћу спремити ручак, а ти постави сто.
I will prepare lunch, and you set the table.
Word by Word: I will prepare lunch, and you set table.
In the nominative, contrast is marked by expressing overt pronouns instead of dropping them.
Common Mistakes
Trying to pronounce an enclitic louder to show contrast instead of using the full form.
Није видео МЕ, него ТЕ.Није видео мене, него тебе.Clitic pronouns are prosodically defective and cannot take phrasal pitch accent. Contrast morphologically forces the full form.
Using full pronouns where no contrast is meant.
Different MeaningЈа видим тебе сваки дан.Видим те сваки дан.'Ја видим тебе сваки дан' is correct, but the full forms add stress: it sounds like 'I see YOU every day', as opposed to someone else. Short forms are fully standard in formal and neutral speech, so use 'Видим те сваки дан' for a plain statement.
Using a clitic form as an isolated, one-word response to a question.
Кога си видео тамо? — Га.Кога си видео тамо? — Њега.Enclitics must phonologically lean on a preceding host word; they can never appear in isolation without a host.
How It Connects
Learn This First
To contrast participants using stressed personal pronouns, learners must understand the default baseline (where subject pronouns are typically dropped and object clitics are used unstressed) as well as the morphological forms of full pronouns and general focus placement in word order.
- Leaving Out a Clear Subject
Understanding that subject pronouns are normally omitted in Serbian helps learners grasp why explicitly using full pronouns serves to highlight contrast or emphasis.
Level 1 - мене / тебе / њега / њеFull Object Pronouns
Contrasting non-subject participants relies on knowledge of the full (stressed) forms of pronouns rather than the default clitic forms.
Level 2 - Topic and Focus
Using stressed pronouns for contrast is an application of sentence focus and information packaging in Serbian.
