мени / теби / њему / њој
Full Dative Pronouns
In Serbian, pronouns like 'to me' or 'to him' have two sets of forms: short clitics (ми, ти, му, јој) and full accented forms (мени, теби, њему, њој). While short clitics are the default for ordinary speech, the full dative forms are essential when you need emphasis, contrast, a complement after a preposition, or when starting a sentence.
How It Works
Serbian personal pronouns distinguish between unstressed clitics and independent, stressed full forms.
1. Forms & Syncretism
The full dative singular forms are:
- мени: 1st person singular (ја → мени)
- теби: 2nd person singular informal (ти → теби)
- њему: 3rd person singular masculine and neuter (он / оно → њему)
- њој: 3rd person singular feminine (она → њој)
Note that masculine and neuter share the form њему. Additionally, in modern Serbian, these full dative forms are identical in spelling to their locative counterparts (о мени, о теби, о њему, о њој). The case is identified strictly by syntax and prepositions.
2. Prepositional Complements
Unstressed clitics (ми, ти, му, јој) can never follow a preposition. Prepositions that govern the dative case—such as према (towards), к/ка (to, towards), упркос (despite), and насупрот (opposite to)—must always be followed by the full dative forms:
• Ишао је ка мени. (He was walking towards me.)
3. Emphasis, Contrast, and Focus
In standard, neutral sentences, native speakers prefer the short enclitics placed in the second syntactic slot (clitics after the first constituent):
• Он ми је дао књигу. (Neutral: He gave me the book.)
However, when you want to highlight, contrast, or stress the person, you choose the full form:
• Дао је књигу мени, а не њему! (He gave the book to me, not to him!)
4. Initial Position and Coordination
Because Serbian enclitics cannot stand at the absolute beginning of a clause, any dative indirect object or experiencer placed first for topicalization must take the full form:
• Мени се допада ова идеја. (To me, this idea is appealing.)
Similarly, coordinated phrases connected by conjunctions like и... и (both... and) or или (or) require full forms: и теби и њој.
Examples (5)
- Дај то мени, а не њему!
Give that to me, not to him!
Word by Word: Give that to-me, and not to-him!
Full forms 'мени' and 'њему' are required here because the sentence expresses direct contrast and emphasis.
- Окренуо се према њој и насмешио се.
He turned toward her and smiled.
Word by Word: Turned self toward to-her and smiled self.
The preposition 'према' governs the dative case and requires the full pronoun 'њој'; a short clitic can never follow a preposition.
- Теби говорим, слушај пажљиво.
I am speaking to you, listen carefully.
Word by Word: To-you I-speak, listen carefully.
Because the pronoun stands at the very beginning of the clause, the full form 'теби' is mandatory.
- И мени и теби је потребан одмор.
Both you and I need a rest.
Word by Word: And to-me and to-you is needed rest.
Coordinated pronouns linked with 'и... и' must appear in their full dative forms.
- Коме си купио поклон? — Њему.
Who did you buy the gift for? — For him.
Word by Word: To-whom are-you bought gift? — To-him.
Elliptical, one-word answers to questions require the stressed full form 'њему'.
Common Mistakes
Using short clitics directly after prepositions.
Ишао је према ми.Ишао је према мени.Short clitics (ми, ти, му, јој) can never follow prepositions in Serbian. Always use full dative pronouns like 'мени' after prepositions.
Overusing full pronouns in neutral statements due to English word order transfer.
Он је дао књигу мени јуче.Он ми је јуче дао књигу.Unless you specifically intend strong contrast or emphasis ('to ME, not someone else'), neutral sentences use the short dative clitic 'ми' in second position.
Confusing full accusative forms with full dative forms after dative prepositions.
Окренуо се према њега.Окренуо се према њему.The preposition 'према' takes the dative case. 'Њега' is genitive/accusative, whereas 'њему' is the correct masculine dative form.
How It Connects
Learn This First
Before using full dative pronoun forms ('мени', 'теби', 'њему', etc.), learners must understand the basic function of the dative case (recipients and experiencers) and its default short clitic forms ('ми', 'ти', 'му', etc.), so they can properly apply full forms for emphasis, contrast, or after prepositions.
