Concession

Level 5Sounds Like iako; mada; ma koliko

Concessive clauses indicate that a main action occurs despite an obstacle. Serbian differentiates between factual obstacles (иако, мада — 'although/even though') and scalar intensity (ма колико — 'no matter how much/hard').

How It Works

Concessive clauses (допусне реченице) express an obstacle or counter-expectation that fails to prevent the realization of the main event: Even though P is true, Q happens anyway.

1. Factual Concession: иако, мада, and премда
• These conjunctions introduce dependent adverbial clauses (зависне прилошке реченице) that qualify the proposition of the main clause by presenting an established fact.
• иако is the primary, neutral conjunction across all speech registers and standard writing.
• мада is fully standard and frequent in both colloquial and written language. In addition to standard subordinate clauses, it frequently introduces retrospective parenthetical qualifications.
• премда serves as a more formal, literary counterpart belonging to the same standard triad.

2. Scalar Concession: ма колико and колико год
Rather than asserting a straightforward factual premise, ма колико (alongside its equivalent колико год) specifies an extreme degree, quantity, or intensity, asserting that no point along the scale can alter the outcome of the main clause:
• Adjective/Adverb Placement and Word Order: Both placing the modified adjective or adverb directly before the verb or participle (e.g., Ма колико тешко било... / Колико год тешко било...) and placing the verbal form before the adjective or adverb (e.g., Ма колико било тешко... / Колико год било тешко...) are entirely natural and standard in Serbian.
• Facultative Subordinating Particle да with Finite Indicative Verbs: The subordinating particle да is facultative (optional) in scalar concessive clauses containing finite indicative verbs or copulas. Both variants—with and without да—are fully standard in literary and formal Serbian (e.g., Ма колико да је исход неизвестан... and Ма колико је исход неизвестан..., or Ма колико тежак да је... and Ма колико је тежак...).
• Clitic Placement: When да is present, clitics (енклитике) attach immediately to the constituent ending in да (e.g., Ма колико да му је тешко..., Ма колико тешко да му је..., Ма колико да се труди...). When да is omitted, clitics must strictly respect second-position (Wackernagel) constraints: they cannot be stranded at the clause end or after a fronted adjective (e.g., *Ма колико тежак је... is ungrammatical). Instead, the clitic must immediately follow ма колико (e.g., Ма колико је тежак..., Ма колико му је тешко...) or the clause must use an l-participle construction (e.g., Ма колико тежак био...).
• Bare Participle and Truncated Forms (крњи перфекат): Scalar concessive clauses without да regularly employ a bare l-participle (truncated perfect) rather than full indicative forms (e.g., Ма колико било тешко..., Ма колико се трудио..., Ма колико тежак био овај задатак...). When да is present with a past action, the full auxiliary clitic is overtly expressed: Ма колико да је било тешко..., Ма колико да се трудио....
• Hypothetical Scalar Concession with the Conditional (потенцијал): To express purely hypothetical, non-factual, or potential degrees, standard Serbian regularly employs the conditional mood formed with the particle би and the active participle (e.g., Ма колико се трудио, не би успео без помоћи; Ма колико тежак био овај задатак, морали бисмо га решити).

3. Clause Order and Connectors
• Ма колико constitutes a fixed constituent; clitics can never split the phrase itself (e.g., *ма се колико is ungrammatical).
• When the subordinate concessive clause precedes the main clause, it is separated by a comma. The main clause often features correlative particles such as ипак ('nevertheless/still') to highlight the unexpected result, but pleonastic coordinate conjunctions like али are avoided.

Examples (4)

  1. Иако смо кренули на време, закаснили смо због непредвиђене гужве у саобраћају.

Even though we set off on time, we were late due to unforeseen traffic.

Word by Word: Although we started on time, we were late due to unforeseen jam in traffic.

Factual concession with 'иако': both starting on time and being late are confirmed past facts.

  2. Прихватио сам понуду, мада нисам био сасвим задовољан условима.

I accepted the offer, although I was not entirely satisfied with the terms.

Word by Word: I accepted auxiliary offer, although I was not completely satisfied with terms.

'мада' connects the postposed clause, presenting a factual afterthought or qualification.

  3. Ма колико се трудио да му објасним проблем, он одбија да саслуша било какав аргумент.

No matter how hard I tried to explain the problem to him, he refuses to listen to any argument.

Word by Word: No matter how much self I tried that to him I explain problem, he refuses that listens any kind argument.

'ма колико' modifies the verb intensity, showing that no amount of effort changes the outcome. Notice the reflexive clitic 'се' follows 'ма колико' directly.

  4. Тај посао морамо привести крају, ма колико да је исход неизвестан.

We must bring that work to an end, however uncertain the outcome may be.

Word by Word: That work we must bring to end, no matter how much that is outcome uncertain.

Scalar concession with 'ма колико да' qualifying the adjective 'неизвестан' (uncertain) alongside the present copula 'је'.

Common Mistakes

  • Splitting 'ма' and 'колико' with second-position clitics.

Ма се колико трудио, није могао да стигне на време.
Ма колико се трудио, није могао да стигне на време.

'Ма колико' functions as a fused phrase and acts as the initial prosodic host. Enclitics such as 'се', 'му', or 'је' must follow the entire phrase, never insert between 'ма' and 'колико'.

  • Adding redundant coordinating conjunctions ('али') to the main clause.

Иако је падала киша, али смо ипак изашли напоље.
Иако је падала киша, ипак смо изашли напоље.

A subordinating concessive clause cannot be paired with an adversative coordinating conjunction like 'али' in the main clause. The focal adverb 'ипак' ('still/nevertheless') is appropriate, but 'али' is ungrammatical.

  • Using factual 'иако' instead of scalar 'ма колико' before a lone adjective.

Иако тешко је, морамо завршити пројекат.
Ма колико да је тешко, морамо завршити пројекат.

To express 'however difficult it is' or 'no matter how hard', use 'ма колико [да]' with the adjective. 'Иако' requires a full proposition (e.g., 'Иако је тешко, ...') and means 'even though it is difficult', not 'no matter how difficult'.
