било да ... било да
Whether One Situation or Another
The paired conjunction било да ... било да translates to 'whether ... or' in English. It introduces two or more contrasting possibilities, indicating that regardless of which one happens, the outcome in the main clause remains completely unchanged.
How It Works
At an advanced level, било да ... било да expresses exhaustive irrelevance: both scenarios (A and B) are explicitly presented, but the speaker establishes that neither condition has any bearing on the truth or consequence expressed in the main independent clause.
1. Clausal vs. Phrasal Usage:
• Phrasal (without да): било новцем, било радом ('whether by money or by labor') — see било ... било.
• Clausal (with да): било да платиш, било да радиш ('whether you pay or you work'). The particle било cannot directly introduce a conjugated verb on its own without да.
2. Distinction from Disjunctive или ... или:
• The coordinating conjunction или ... или ('either ... or') marks an exclusive choice between assertions, where only one applies.
• In contrast, било да ... било да is a subordinating conditional-concessive construction. It does not force an exclusive choice; it asserts that the matrix statement holds true regardless of which alternative takes place.
3. Tense and Mood in the Subordinate Clause:
Verbs in било да clauses take indicative forms:
• Present indicative for ongoing or habitual events: било да желиш, било да не желиш...
• Future-oriented alternatives take the present tense (typically the perfective present, not the future tense): било да победи, било да изгуби... In standard Serbian adverbial conditional-concessive clauses, футур I is ungrammatical.
• Past indicative (перфекат): било да је дошао, било да је закаснио...
4. Structural Variants:
Standard Serbian readily allows pairing било да with или instead of repeating било да: било да одлучиш сада или да сачекаш сутра... In addition, when coordinated with или, conjunction reduction naturally permits omitting the second да without a comma: било да одеш или останеш...
