било ... било
Alternative Possibilities
The paired conjunction било ... било translates to "whether ... or ..." or "be it ... or ...". It coordinates two or more grammatically parallel elements (nouns, adverbs, adjectives, or prepositional phrases), indicating that the main clause applies equally to both, irrespective of which alternative holds.
How It Works
In standard Serbian, било ... било acts as a paired disjunctive conjunction (удвојени раставни везник). Rather than casual conversational speech—where speakers typically favor или ... или, било да ... било да, or свеједно да ли—the bare phrase-level correlative било ... било belongs predominantly to formal registers, journalism, official prose, and literature.
1. Punctuation Rules (Matica Srpska Orthography)
Punctuation with repeated disjunctive conjunctions in Serbian is governed by intonation and communicative structure:
- In tightly linked, short adverbial or prepositional expressions spoken in a single breath, no comma is used: било дању било ноћу, било у граду било на селу.
- Whenever the conjuncts are emphasized, paused over, syntactically expanded, or added parenthetically, a comma before the second било is standard and fully licensed (e.g., било пре, било касније; било на послу, било ван њега).
2. Semantic Nuance: Inclusive Indifference
While или ... или usually signals an exclusive choice where one alternative rules out the other, било ... било indicates concessive equivalence or indifference. It conveys that regardless of whether option A or option B holds true, the main proposition remains unchanged (e.g., Примамо помоћ, било у новцу било у храни — "We accept help, whether in money or in food").
3. The Variant било ... или
Standard usage also licenses pairing the first било with или instead of repeating било (било А или Б; e.g., било дању или ноћу — "whether by day or by night"). Both variants perform the same concessive alternative function.
4. Morphosyntactic Parallelism and Prepositions
Both alternatives introduced by the pair must match grammatically:
- Case matching: If the first item takes a particular case, the second must match: Помажемо свима, било пријатељима, било странцима (both in the dative plural).
- Preposition placement: The marker било precedes the preposition; never place a preposition in front of the pair (avoid *у било граду било селу). Instead, repeat the appropriate governing preposition after each marker: било у граду, било на селу.
- Adjectives and Adverbs: било пре, било касније (adverbs), било жив, било мртав (adjectives), помоћ, било новчану, било материјалну (accusative adjectives modifying the noun).
5. Phrases vs. Clauses
Bare било ... било connects word- and phrase-level elements. When linking full clauses with inflected finite verbs, Serbian requires the subordinator да: било да ... било да (e.g., Било да победимо, било да изгубимо, остаћемо поносни — "Whether we win or lose, we will remain proud").
6. Invariability
Do not confuse this conjunction with the neuter радни глаголски придев of the verb бити (био, била, било). As a conjunction, било is strictly invariable and never inflects for gender, number, or case.

Common Mistakes
Using mismatched grammatical cases across the coordinated elements.
Помогли су свима, било пријатељи, било странцима.Помогли су свима, било пријатељима, било странцима.Both conjuncts must reflect the exact same case marking. Because the verb governs the dative ('свима'), both 'пријатељима' and 'странцима' must be in the dative plural.
Using 'било ... било' to force an exclusive choice.
Хоћеш ли било чај, било кафу?Хоћеш ли чај или кафу?'Било ... било' expresses indifference or concessive equivalence ('whether A or B'), not an exclusive question forcing the listener to pick one. For choices, use 'или'.
Inflecting 'било' to agree with a feminine or plural noun.
Прихватамо помоћ, била новчану, била материјалну.Прихватамо помоћ, било новчану, било материјалну.As a conjunction, 'било' is completely frozen and invariable. It does not inflect like the past participle 'био/била/било'.
