Reported Conditional in News

Level 5

Romanian can use the conditional to attribute information without endorsing it: Suspectul ar fi fugit can mean “The suspect reportedly fled”. Context distinguishes this from a hypothetical reading.

How It Works

In Romanian media and speech, the conditional mood serves a crucial role in evidentiality—indicating the source and reliability of information. When a journalist says 'Suspectul ar fi fugit', they aren't saying he would have fled; they are saying he reportedly fled.

Key Characteristics:

  • Distancing: The speaker signals they are relaying third-party information without vouching for its truth.
  • No 'If' Clause: In the reportative reading, the claim need not have a dacă (if) clause. A missing if-clause alone is not a diagnostic: hypothetical conditions can also be left implicit.
  • Register: While it is common in journalism and legal contexts, it is also used in everyday conversation to report hearsay or rumors (e.g., 'Se spune că ar fi plecat').

Tense Usage:

  • Past Events: Uses the Past Conditional (ar fi + participle). This is the most common form for reporting events.
  • Present States: Uses the Present Conditional (ar + infinitive). Often used with a fi to describe ongoing situations or allegations.

Examples (4)

  1. Suspectul ar fi părăsit țara imediat după incident.

The suspect reportedly left the country immediately after the incident.

Word by Word: The suspect would be left the country immediately after the incident.

The use of 'ar fi părăsit' (past conditional) indicates that this is a report from a source, not a fact witnessed by the speaker.

  2. Potrivit unor surse, ministrul ar fi depus deja cererea de demisie.

According to some sources, the minister has allegedly already submitted his resignation.

Word by Word: According to some sources, the minister would be submitted already the request of resignation.

The phrase 'potrivit unor surse' (according to sources) often triggers the reported conditional to maintain journalistic neutrality.

  3. În acest caz ar fi implicat și un al doilea vehicul.

A second vehicle is reportedly involved in this case.

Word by Word: In this case would be involved also a second vehicle.

Here, the present conditional 'ar fi implicat' describes an ongoing state or a current allegation.

  4. Banii ar fi fost transferați într-un cont din străinătate.

The money was allegedly transferred to a foreign account.

Word by Word: The money would be been transferred in a account from abroad.

This combines the reported conditional with the passive voice.

Common Mistakes

  • Translating a reportative conditional as a counterfactual in an explicitly news-reporting context.

Potrivit martorilor, ar fi plecat. (Translation: According to witnesses, he would have left.)
Potrivit martorilor, ar fi plecat. (Translation: According to witnesses, he reportedly left.)

In the intended reportative reading, ar fi plecat attributes a claim. In another context the same verb form can express a hypothetical “would have left”.
