Dropping Subject Pronouns

Level 1

Romanian is a 'pro-drop' language, meaning you don't need to say words like eu (I) or tu (you) in normal sentences.

How It Works

In English, you must always say who is doing the action: I speak, you speak. In Romanian, the verb ending usually does this job for you.

For example, the ending -em in mergem strictly means 'we go'. Both Mergem and Noi mergem are grammatical. Omission is common when the subject is already clear; an overt pronoun can identify, contrast, or maintain a topic without being defensive.

When to actually use pronouns:

  • Emphasis or Contrast: Eu plătesc, tu mănânci. (I pay, you eat.)
  • Clearing up ambiguity: Some verb forms are identical for 'I' and 'they' (like vorbesc), or 'he', 'she', and 'they' (like cântă). If it's not clear from context, you might keep el, ea, ei, or ele (e.g., el cântă vs ei cântă).
  • Politeness: Formal pronouns like dumneavoastră are frequently kept to explicitly show respect.

Important Notes:

  • Romanian does not use a dummy 'it' for weather or general statements. You just use the verb: Plouă. (It is raining.)
  • Use a clitic when you intend an explicit pronominal object, as in îl văd (I see him). An object can be unexpressed in other contexts; subject omission does not by itself license deleting required clitics.

Examples (5)

  1. Vorbesc românește.

    I speak Romanian.

    Word by Word: Speak Romanian.

Neutral statement. 'Eu' is omitted. While 'vorbesc' can also mean 'they speak', context usually makes it clear that it means 'I'.

  2. Mergem la mare în august.

We are going to the seaside in August.

Word by Word: Go to sea in August.

Neutral statement. 'Noi' (we) is omitted because the '-em' ending strictly tells us who is going.

  3. Eu plătesc, tu lași bacșișul.

I'll pay, you leave the tip.

Word by Word: I pay, you leave tip-the.

Pronouns are included here specifically to contrast the two actors.

  4. Sunt obosit.

    I am tired.

    Word by Word: Am tired.

A simple statement of state. Eu can be included when the speaker wants to identify or contrast the subject; it is not inherently dramatic or defensive.

  5. Ea citește o carte, iar el doarme.

She is reading a book, and he is sleeping.

Word by Word: She reads a book, and he sleeps.

Pronouns are kept to clarify exactly who is doing what, especially since third-person verbs don't show gender.

Common Mistakes

  • Omitting him when the intended meaning is I see him.

    Văd.
    Îl văd.

For the intended meaning I see him, use the direct-object clitic îl: Îl văd. Văd alone is grammatical and can mean I see, but does not explicitly express him. Subject-pronoun omission does not license removing a required object clitic.
