Academic Hedging

Level 6

Academic hedging uses specific verbal frames like s-ar putea (it might be), ar indica (would indicate), and nu se poate exclude (cannot be excluded) to soften assertions and signal scientific caution.

How It Works

Academic hedging is a hallmark of formal Romanian prose, particularly in research and legal contexts. It involves three primary strategies:

  • S-ar putea (să): This is an impersonal reflexive construction using the conditional auxiliary ar. It expresses epistemic possibility, meaning “it might be that”. In the impersonal possibility pattern s-ar putea să..., it introduces the subjunctive mood.
  • Ar indica / Ar sugera: By using the 3rd person conditional (ar) instead of the indicative (indică), the writer frames the conclusion as a possibility derived from evidence rather than an absolute truth.
  • Nu se poate exclude: A formal litotes (understatement) used to acknowledge alternative hypotheses. It typically precedes a noun phrase or a că-clause.

These patterns are not merely about politeness; they are functional tools for precision, allowing the author to define the exact limits of their claims.

Other standard forms
Ar putea să plouă is grammatical without se. Do not infer that every subjectless possibility clause needs s-. Also distinguish impersonal s-ar putea să... from the construction with a bare infinitive in s-ar putea trage concluzia.

Examples (4)

  1. Rezultatele ar indica o relație semnificativă între variabile.

The results would indicate a significant relationship between variables.

Word by Word: Results-the would indicate a relationship significant between variables.

Using 'ar indica' (conditional) instead of 'indică' (indicative) signals that this is an interpretation of the data.

  2. S-ar putea ca eșantionul să fie limitat.

It might be that the sample is limited.

Word by Word: Itself-would could that sample-the SUBJ be limited.

'S-ar putea' is the impersonal 'it might,' which requires the subjunctive 'să fie'.

  3. Nu se poate exclude posibilitatea unei erori de măsurare.

The possibility of a measurement error cannot be excluded.

Word by Word: Not itself can exclude possibility-the of-a error of measurement.

A formal way to acknowledge potential flaws without stating they definitely occurred.

  4. S-ar putea trage concluzia că fenomenul este recurent.

The conclusion could be drawn that the phenomenon is recurrent.

Word by Word: Itself-would could draw conclusion-the that phenomenon-the is recurrent.

Here, 's-ar putea' is used with a short infinitive 'trage' in a passive-like impersonal construction.

Common Mistakes

  • Omitting să from the ca + subject + să pattern.

S-ar putea ca eșantionul fie limitat.
S-ar putea ca eșantionul să fie limitat.

The subordinate verb in this construction requires să. Other constructions with putea take a bare infinitive, as in s-ar putea trage concluzia.
