Perfect Presumptive

Level 5

The Perfect Presumptive is the Romanian way of saying 'must have,' 'probably did,' or 'might have.' It is used when you aren't 100% sure of a fact but are making an educated guess about the past.

How It Works

A guess about an earlier event
O fi plecat can mean “He or she has probably left”; Or fi plecat can mean “They have probably left”. The common conversational pattern is a reduced future auxiliary + fi + an invariable past participle.

Meaning
The speaker infers or wonders about a past event. Cine o fi sunat? means “Who could have called?” A fuller form such as va fi plecat can be inferential or a future perfect; the surrounding context supplies the reading.

Related forms
Conditional ar fi plecat and interrogative să fi plecat? can also convey uncertainty, but they are conditional and subjunctive forms with their own uses. Do not treat every occurrence of fi + participle as the same mood.

Do not confuse inference with regional past forms
Regional o plecat can be an ordinary past-tense assertion. In the inferential pattern taught here, keep fi. The ordinary statement Probabil a plecat is also grammatical and expresses probability explicitly.

Examples (4)

  1. Nu răspunde nimeni la telefon; or fi plecat deja.

Nobody is answering the phone; they must have already left.

Word by Word: Not answers nobody at phone; they-must be left already.

Here, 'or fi plecat' expresses a logical deduction based on the fact that no one is answering.

  2. Cine o fi sunat la ușă la ora asta?

Who could have rung the doorbell at this hour?

Word by Word: Who it-must be rung at door at hour this?

The speaker is wondering or expressing uncertainty about a past action using the 3rd person singular 'o fi'.

  3. O fi fost greu, dar am terminat proiectul.

It may have been hard, but I finished the project.

Word by Word: It-must be been hard, but I-have finished project-the.

This is a concessive use, acknowledging that it was likely difficult before moving to the main point.

  4. Unde or fi pus cheile? Nu le găsesc nicăieri.

Where could they have put the keys? I can't find them anywhere.

Word by Word: Where they-must be put keys-the? Not them I-find nowhere.

Uses the 3rd person plural 'or fi' to express a guess about where someone else put an object.

Common Mistakes

  • Using a finite present verb instead of the participle.

    O fi pleacă deja.
    O fi plecat deja.

The past inference uses fi + participle plecat. Pleacă is a finite present form.
