The Sound Â/î

Level 1

The letters â and î represent the same /ɨ/ sound. Generally use î at word edges and â inside; prefixed words and compounds can keep an internal î.

How It Works

In Romanian, the sound /ɨ/ is written in two ways based on specific rules established by the Romanian Academy:

  • î (Word Edges): Used at the very beginning of a word (e.g., început) and at the very end of a word (e.g., a coborî). Final î is familiar from fourth-conjugation infinitives such as a hotărî and a urî, although it is not limited to verbs.
  • â (Internal): Used inside a word when the sound is surrounded by other letters (e.g., când, român).

The Morphological Exception (Prefixes & Compounds):
If a word starts with î and you add a prefix or combine it into a compound word, the î stays as an î, even though it is now internal. For example, ne- + înțeles becomes neînțeles, and bine + înțeles becomes bineînțeles.

The Suffix Rule:
Unlike prefixes, when you add a suffix to a word ending in î, the letter changes to â because it is no longer at the edge. For example, the verb a coborî (to descend) becomes coborât (descended) in the past participle.

Proper Nouns:
The word România and its derivatives always use â. Some family names retain traditional spellings, such as Rîpeanu.

The Common Forms sunt, suntem, sunteți:
The 1993 Academy decision also restored these spellings of a fi (to be). Write Eu sunt aici (I am here), Noi suntem aici (We are here), and Voi sunteți aici (You are here). Learn them as verb forms; they are not applications of the â/î position rule.

Reading Older Texts:
Texts following the earlier spelling norm may contain sînt or coborît. Recognize these as historical spellings rather than different verbs. For current standard writing, use sunt and coborât. The history has exceptions, so do not assume that every older text replaces every â with î.

Examples (6)

  1. Când plouă, stau în casă.

When it rains, I stay indoors.

Word by Word: When rains, I-stay in house.

Note 'când' uses 'â' because the sound is internal, while 'în' uses 'î' because it is at the start of the word.

  2. Vreau să învăț limba română.

I want to learn the Romanian language.

Word by Word: I-want to learn language-the Romanian.

'învăț' starts with 'î', while 'română' uses 'â' internally.

  3. A coborî muntele este periculos.

    Descending the mountain is dangerous.

Word by Word: To descend mountain-the is dangerous.

'coborî' ends with 'î' because the sound is at the very end of the infinitive verb form.

  4. Acest text este neînțeles.

    This text is not understood.

Word by Word: This text is not-understood.

This shows the prefix exception: 'ne-' + 'înțeles' keeps the 'î' even though it is now internal.

  5. Bineînțeles că vin!

    Of course I'm coming!

Word by Word: Well-understood that I-come!

In compound words like 'bineînțeles', the 'î' from the root word 'înțeles' is preserved.

  6. Am coborât din mașină.

I got out of the car.

Word by Word: I-have descended from car.

When a suffix is added to 'a coborî', the final 'î' becomes internal and changes to 'â' (coborât).

Common Mistakes

  • Using 'â' at the beginning of a word.

    âncepe
    începe

For standard common words such as începe, initial /ɨ/ is written î. Names may preserve their registered spelling.

  • Changing 'î' to 'â' after adding a prefix or forming a compound.

    reâncepe / bineânțeles
    reîncepe / bineînțeles

When a prefix is added or a compound word is formed with a root starting with 'î', the 'î' is preserved to show the word's origin.

  • Keeping the older spelling coborît in current standard writing.

    coborît
    coborât

In current standard spelling, the participle is coborât: the sound is internal after -t is added. Coborît occurs in texts using an earlier norm.
