Present Presumptive
The Present Presumptive (Prezumtivul prezent) is used to express a guess, inference, or probability about what is happening right now. It is the Romanian equivalent of saying 'He must be sleeping' or 'They are probably eating' when you aren't 100% sure.
How It Works
A guess about now
The present presumptive can present an inference about an ongoing action: O fi dormind (“He or she is probably sleeping”). A common pattern is a future auxiliary + fi + gerund.
Forms and register
Recognize full future auxiliaries, as in va fi dormind, and reduced forms such as singular o fi dormind and plural or fi dormind. Some regional speech uses invariant o more widely; learn the singular/plural contrast before interpreting those regional forms.
States
O fi acasă means “He or she may be at home”. This has a predicative complement, not a gerund. O fi el bogat, dar... can concede a possibility before introducing a contrast.
Context matters
Future forms can also have inferential meanings without the full fi + gerund sequence. Do not identify the interpretation from one auxiliary alone. Questions such as Unde o fi umblând? express wondering; context determines whether a future-looking or inferential reading is intended.
Examples (4)
- E liniște în casă; copiii or fi dormind.
It's quiet in the house; the children must be sleeping.
Word by Word: Is quiet in house; children they-must be sleeping.
Here, 'or fi dormind' expresses a logical deduction based on the silence in the house.
- Oare cine o fi sunând la ușa noastră acum?
I wonder who could be ringing our doorbell now?
Word by Word: I-wonder who must be ringing at door our now?
The presumptive is used here to express a speculative question about a current event.
- O fi el bogat, dar nu este fericit.
He may well be rich, but he is not happy.
Word by Word: Must be he rich, but not is happy.
This shows the concessive use, where the speaker grants a point ('he might be rich') before adding a contrast.
- Unde o fi umblând Mihai la ora asta?
Where could Mihai be wandering at this hour?
Word by Word: Where must be wandering Mihai at hour this?
The speaker is guessing about Mihai's current location or activity.
Common Mistakes
Putting a finite verb after fi in the ongoing presumptive pattern.
O fi doarme acum.O fi dormind acum.Use the gerund dormind for the ongoing-action construction; doarme is a finite present form.
How It Connects
Learn This First
Recognize inference as the function of presumptive forms before focusing on present situations.
Related Patterns
- The Gerund
A gerund supplies the lexical action in ongoing patterns such as o fi dormind; state expressions such as o fi acasă do not contain a gerund.
Level 3 - Perfect Presumptive
The perfect version is used for deductions about past actions ('He must have slept').
Level 5 - Future With o să
Compare future o să doarmă with inferential o fi dormind; these are different constructions despite their initial o.
Level 2 - Conditional as Reported/Unconfirmed
While the presumptive is for the speaker's own inference, the reportative conditional is used for hearsay.
Level 4
