The Presumptive

Level 4

The Presumptive Mood (Modul Prezumtiv) is Romanian's way of saying 'probably' or 'must be' without using extra adverbs. It indicates that you are making an educated guess or inference rather than stating a known fact.

How It Works

Romanian can use future-shaped forms to express a guess or inference.

A current state: O fi acasă can mean 'He/she is probably at home'. O is a third-person singular auxiliary here, not an invariant particle for every person. Compare Or fi acasă (They are probably at home). Full future forms such as va fi can also receive an inferential reading.

An ongoing action: Use a future auxiliary plus fi + gerund: O fi lucrând (He/she is probably working). Forms with fiind, such as o fi fiind ocupat, are possible, though the shorter o fi ocupat is common.

An earlier action: Use a future auxiliary plus fi + past participle: O fi plecat can mean 'He/she probably left'.

Context: Future forms may refer to future time or express an inference. O să fie acasă acum can also express a guess in context; it is not categorically ungrammatical. Time expressions and the surrounding conversation help identify the reading.

Person: The future-style auxiliary changes with the subject. Learn its paradigm instead of extending third-person o to everyone.

Examples (6)

  1. Nu răspunde la telefon; o fi dormind.

He's not answering the phone; he must be sleeping.

Word by Word: Not answers at phone; he-might be sleeping.

Uses the present presumptive (o + fi + gerund) to infer a current ongoing action.

  2. Cine o fi sunat la ora asta?

Who could have called at this hour?

Word by Word: Who might be called at hour this?

Uses the past presumptive (o + fi + past participle) to wonder about a past event.

  3. N-o fi știind adevărul.

He probably doesn't know the truth.

Word by Word: Not-might be knowing truth-the.

Demonstrates the negative form 'n-o fi' used to express probability about a lack of knowledge.

  4. O fi el deștept, dar nu învață deloc.

He may be smart, but he doesn't study at all.

Word by Word: Might be he smart, but not learns at-all.

A concessive use of the presumptive, granting a point before making a contrast.

  5. Să fi plecat deja?

    Could they have left already?

Word by Word: Subjunctive-particle be left already?

Uses the subjunctive-based presumptive (să + fi + participle) to express a higher degree of doubt or questioning.

  6. Unde or fi copiii acum?

Where could the children be now?

Word by Word: Where might-they be children-the now?

Uses the plural auxiliary 'or' to express curiosity about a current state.

Common Mistakes

  • Using a conjugated verb instead of a gerund.

    O fi lucrează.
    O fi lucrând.

In the continuous pattern o fi lucrând, use the gerund lucrând rather than the finite present lucrează. Other presumptive constructions can describe a state or a completed event.

Learn This First

Recognize future-shaped auxiliaries and distinguish invariant o in o să from the person-inflected series used in o fi and or fi. A current inference may use fi with a predicate, an ongoing action uses fi plus gerund, and an earlier action uses fi plus participle.
