Future Register Variation

Level 4

Common futures include voi + infinitive, o să + subjunctive, am să + subjunctive, and familiar/regional short-auxiliary forms.

How It Works

Romanian has several common future constructions.

Voi + infinitive: voi pleca, vei pleca, va pleca, vom pleca, veți pleca, vor pleca. This is common in writing and also valid in conversation.

O să + subjunctive: o să plec, o să pleci, o să plece, o să plecăm, o să plecați, o să plece. Here o stays unchanged.

Am să + subjunctive: am să plec, ai să pleci, are să plece, avem să plecăm, aveți să plecați, au să plece. This is common in speech.

Short future auxiliaries: Forms such as oi pleca and om pleca occur especially in familiar or regional speech; exact second-person variants vary.

Choice: Register, region and emphasis influence the choice. These forms overlap in ordinary future reference; there is no rule prohibiting voi in a casual conversation.

Clitics: Compare îl voi vedea and o să-l văd. Choose placement for the actual construction.

Examples (5)

  1. Guvernul va adopta noi legi.

The government will adopt new laws.

Word by Word: Government-the will adopt new laws.

Uses the formal 'va' + infinitive, typical of news reports or official statements.

  2. O să mergem la film diseară.

We are going to the movies tonight.

Word by Word: It-will that we-go to movie tonight.

Uses the neutral 'o să' + subjunctive, the standard choice for daily conversation.

  3. Om vedea noi ce s-o întâmpla.

    We'll see what might happen.

Word by Word: We-will see we what itself-will happen.

Uses the popular 'om' and 'o' forms, giving a relaxed, folksy, or uncertain tone.

  4. Am să te sun imediat ce ajung.

I will call you as soon as I arrive.

Word by Word: I-have that you call immediately what I-arrive.

Uses 'am să' to emphasize a personal commitment or intention.

  5. O fi plecat deja.

    He has probably left already.

Word by Word: It-will be left already.

Demonstrates the popular future form 'o' used as a presumptive to express probability.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the indicative instead of the subjunctive after 'o să'.

    O să merge la magazin.
    O să meargă la magazin.

The 'o să' construction requires the subjunctive mood (meargă), not the standard present indicative (merge).
