Future in the Past With avea să

The Avea Să Future

Level 4

Combine an imperfect form of a avea with să + subjunctive: aveam să plec (I was to leave).

How It Works

Avea să uses the imperfect of a avea plus să and a subjunctive verb:
aveam să plec, aveai să pleci, avea să plece, aveam să plecăm, aveați să plecați, aveau să plece.

Future viewed from the past: Aveam să plec a doua zi means 'I was to leave the next day'. The action was later than the past reference point.

Narrative foreshadowing: The construction can introduce something the narrator knows happened later. This can create a sense of destiny, but destiny is not part of every use.

Contrast with present avea: Am să plec looks ahead from now; aveam să plec looks ahead from a past moment. Both are grammatical, with different time perspectives.

Agreement: The imperfect auxiliary and the subjunctive each use the form appropriate to the subject. Negation precedes the auxiliary: Nu aveam să aflu decât mai târziu.

Related forms: Urma să plec can emphasize an expected or planned event. Neither construction alone guarantees fulfillment in every context.

I didn't know that that meeting would change my life.

Note how the clitic 'mi' is placed between 'să' and the verb, following standard subjunctive clitic rules.

  4. Ei aveau să descopere adevărul mult mai târziu.

They were to discover the truth much later.

Word by Word: They had to discover truth-the much more late.

The auxiliary 'aveau' and the subjunctive 'descopere' both agree with the plural subject 'ei'.

Common Mistakes

  • Using a plural third-person auxiliary with eu.

    Eu aveau să plec.
    Eu aveam să plec.

Eu takes aveam; aveau belongs to ei/ele. The subjunctive is să plec for eu.
