întrucât / deoarece / dat fiind că
Formal Causes
Romanian uses deoarece, întrucât, and dat fiind că to introduce causes or reasons, often in careful writing. The indicative is common, but mood follows the intended meaning rather than an absolute connector-only rule.
How It Works
In formal Romanian, choosing the right causal connector depends on the register and the flow of information:
- Deoarece: The most common formal alternative to pentru că. It is neutral and widely used in news, professional emails, and essays.
- Întrucât: Common in careful written argument and also possible in speech. It is often used at the beginning of a sentence to introduce a reason that justifies the main statement (e.g., 'Since X is true, Y follows').
- Dat fiind că: Literally 'given the fact that'. It is bureaucratic and administrative, used to base a conclusion on a circumstance presented as a premise.
Grammatical Rules:
1. Mood: These connectors commonly occur with the indicative mood (e.g., este, a fost). Mood follows the intended meaning; for example, a conditional can present a reported or hypothetical reason. Do not insert să after the connector merely because it introduces a subordinate clause.
2. Punctuation: Detached explanatory causal clauses are set off by commas. Punctuation depends on position and integration into the sentence; do not automatically insert a comma into every causal construction.
3. Word Order: Unlike căci (another formal 'for'), these three can be placed at the very beginning of a sentence to set the context.
Examples (5)
- Deoarece a plouat torențial, evenimentul a fost amânat.
Because it rained heavily, the event was postponed.
Word by Word: Because it has rained torrentially, the event has been postponed.
A standard formal usage of 'deoarece' to explain a direct cause.
- Întrucât nu s-au prezentat dovezi noi, cazul a fost clasat.
Since no new evidence was presented, the case was closed.
Word by Word: Since not themselves-have presented evidence new, the case has been closed.
Here 'întrucât' introduces a premise (lack of evidence) that leads to a legal conclusion.
- Dat fiind că este o zi de sărbătoare, programul este redus.
Given that it is a holiday, the schedule is reduced.
Word by Word: Given being that it is a day of holiday, the schedule is reduced.
'Dat fiind că' highlights the specific circumstance (the holiday) as the basis for the change.
- Vă scriu deoarece doresc să solicit o informație suplimentară.
I am writing to you because I wish to request additional information.
Word by Word: To you I write because I wish to request an information additional.
Deoarece introduces the reason. Pentru că would also be standard in a professional email.
- Întrucât termenul a expirat, cererea nu mai poate fi procesată.
Since the deadline has expired, the request can no longer be processed.
Word by Word: Since the term has expired, the request no more can be processed.
Using 'întrucât' at the start of the sentence is common in administrative contexts.
Common Mistakes
Using the subjunctive mood after formal causal connectors.
Deoarece să fie frig, am luat haina.Deoarece era frig, am luat haina.Deoarece introduces the reason directly. In this sentence era expresses the past circumstance; do not insert să before it.
Misspelling 'întrucât' as two separate words.
Întru cât nu am timp...Întrucât nu am timp...When used as a causal conjunction meaning 'since', it must be written as one word.
How It Connects
Learn This First
Recognize a cause before choosing a connector suited to formal prose. Recognize fiind as a gerund in dat fiind că, rather than as a participle.

These are the formal 'result' counterparts (therefore/consequently) to these causal connectors.
Level 5 - Concession With deșiAlthough with Deși
Deși expresses concession rather than cause. The indicative is common with it too, while a different intended meaning can license another mood.
Level 3 - Academic Hedging
Often used alongside formal causal connectors in academic writing to soften claims.
Level 6 - Formal Nominal Style
Formal causes are a key component of the 'nominal style' used in Romanian administration and law.
