ont

Where

Level 1

Ont asks where; d'ont asks where from.

How It Works

Start with ont and keep the usual verb form: Ont demòras? (Where do you live?), Ont anatz? (Where are you going?), Ont es la cadièra? (Where is the chair?). The same word works for a place and for a destination.

For origin, de joins ont and becomes d': D'ont ès? (Where are you from?), D'ont es Maria? The answer uses de: Soi de Tolosa.

English moves the preposition to the end ("Where are you from?"). In Occitan it stays at the start, joined to ont as d'ont. To ask about time use quora, not ont.

Examples (4)

  1. Ont demòra Joan?

    Where does Joan live?

    Ont asks the place.

  2. Ont anatz?

    Where are you going?

    Ont asks the destination.

  3. D'ont ès?

    Where are you from?

    D'ont asks the origin.

  4. D'ont es Maria?

    Where is Maria from?

    Es goes with Maria.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting the preposition at the end, as in English.

    Ont ès de?
    D'ont ès?

The preposition de joins ont at the start and becomes d'ont.
