Saying Where You Are From
Use èsser and de with a place to say where you are from.
How It Works
To say where you are from, use a form of èsser, then de and the place.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| D'ont ès? (to a friend) | Soi de Tolosa. (I am from Toulouse.) |
| D'ont sètz? (polite, or to several people) | Sèm de Carcassona. (We are from Carcassonne.) |
| D'ont es Maria? | Maria es d'Albi. (Maria is from Albi.) |
De becomes d' before a vowel: d'Albi. The question word d'ont is de + ont (from where).
Do not mix it up with ont. Ont ès? asks where you are now. D'ont ès? asks where you come from.
To say where you live, use a: Demòri a Tolosa.
