Living Somewhere

Level 1

Demorar means to live in a place.

How It Works

ieudemòriDemòri a Rodés.
tudemòrasOnt demòras?

nosautresdemoramDemoram en França.
vosautres, vosdemoratzDemoratz en França?
eles, elasdemòranDemòran a Albi.

Stress decides the spelling. In demòri, demòras, demòra and demòran the stress falls on the stem, and the vowel is the open ò. In demoram and demoratz the stress moves to the ending, and the stem has a plain o.

Say the place after the verb: a before a city (a Rodés) and en before a country (en França). The verb can also mean to stay or to remain.

Examples (4)

  1. Demòri a Rodés.

    I live in Rodez.

The stem is stressed, so demòri has ò.

  2. Demoratz en França?

    Do you live in France?

The ending is stressed, so demoratz has a plain o.

  3. Maria demòra a Nimes.

    Maria lives in Nîmes.

Demòra is the he or she form.

  4. Ont demòras?

    Where do you live?

    Ont asks the place.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting ò in forms where the ending is stressed.

    Demòram a Albi.
    Demoram a Albi.

In demoram and demoratz the ending is stressed, so the stem keeps a plain o.
