aicí, aquí, ailà
Here and There
Aicí, aquí and ailà name three distances: here, there and over there.
How It Works
Three small words tell the distance from the speaker.
| Word | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| aicí | here | Demòri aicí. (I live here.) |
| aquí | there | Lo cafè es aquí. (The coffee is there.) |
| ailà | over there | Maria es ailà. (Maria is over there.) |
They never change for gender or number, and they usually come after the verb.
If you read Spanish, be careful: Spanish aquí means here, but Occitan aquí means there. For here, Occitan uses aicí.
To ask where something is, use ont: Ont es Joan? The answer is often one of these three words.
