Simple Past of -re Verbs

Level 4

Stem plus -èri, -èt and the other endings gives the simple past of a -re verb.

How It Works

Personvendremetre
ieuvendèrimetèri
tuvendèresmetères
el, elavendètmetèt
nosautresvendèremmetèrem
vosautresvendèretzmetèretz
eles, elasvendèronmetèron

The accent is part of every ending: vendèt, vendèron. The stress falls on the è, and a missing accent is a spelling mistake.

The same endings fit pèrdre (perdèri) and respondre (respondèri).

Some -re verbs have their own stem and take -guèri instead: prene gives prenguèri, and beure gives beguèri. They have a separate entry.

The simple past suits a story told in order: Marta vendèt sa veitura e crompèt un ostal.

Examples (5)

  1. Joan vendèt sa veitura.

    Joan sold his car.

Vendèt is the el form of vendre.

  2. Metèrem las claus dins lo sac.

We put the keys in the bag.

Metèrem is the nosautres form of metre.

  3. Marta respondèt a Joan.

    Marta answered Joan.

Respondèt is the el form of respondre.

  4. Perdèron lo tren.

    They missed the train.

Perdèron is the eles form of pèrdre.

  5. Perdèri las claus dins lo pargue.

Perdèri is the ieu form of pèrdre.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the -ir pattern with -igu-.

    Vendiguèri mon ostal.
    Vendèri mon ostal.

-re verbs take -èri, not -iguèri.
