Simple Past of -ir Verbs

Level 4

-ir verbs add -igu- before the endings: finiguèri, finiguèt.

How It Works

Personfinirpartir
ieufiniguèripartiguèri
tufiniguèrespartiguères
el, elafiniguètpartiguèt
nosautresfiniguèrempartiguèrem
vosautresfiniguèretzpartiguèretz
eles, elasfiniguèronpartiguèron

The u keeps the g hard before è, so the spelling is the same in all six forms.

The pattern is the same for dormir (dormiguèri), sortir (sortiguèri) and legir (legiguèri).

Two verbs have their own forms: venir and téner give venguèri and tenguèri. They have an entry of their own.

The simple past suits a story told in order: Un jorn, Marta partiguèt per Carcassona e dormiguèt dins una ostalariá.
