Simple Past of -ar Verbs

Level 4

Stem plus -èri, -ères, -èt, -èrem, -èretz, -èron gives the simple past of an -ar verb.

How It Works

Personparlar
ieuparlèri
tuparlères
el, elaparlèt
nosautresparlèrem
vosautresparlèretz
eles, elasparlèron

The accent on è is part of every ending: parlèt, parlèron. Leave it out and the word is misspelled.

The spelling of the stem follows the sound. Before è, the soft sounds are written g and c, as before i: manjar gives mangèri, and començar gives comencèri. The hard g sound of jogar needs gu: joguèri.

In conversation, the compound past takes the place of the simple past for recent events. The simple past is the tense of stories and written accounts.

    Cantèrem is the nosautres form.

Joan found a key in the street.

Trobèt is the el form, with an accent.

Mangèri keeps the g of manjar.

  4. Los dròlles joguèron dins lo pargue.

Common Mistakes

  • Dropping the accent on the ending.

Joan trobet una clau dins la carrièra.
Joan trobèt una clau dins la carrièra.

The ending -èt carries a grave accent.

  • Writing j before è.

    Manjèri tot lo pan.
    Mangèri tot lo pan.

The spelling follows the sound: mangèri has a g.
