रहेछ

Discovering Something New

Level 4Sounds Like rahēcha

रहेछ turns a plain statement into one that tells your listener this is new to you.

How It Works

Nepali has a special way to say that something surprises you or that you have only just seen it for yourself. It uses रहेछ in place of छ or हो.

PlainNew to you
यो मीठो छ।यो मीठो रहेछ!
उनी शिक्षक हुन्।उनी शिक्षक रहेछन्।
पसल बन्द छ।पसल बन्द रहेछ।

With a verb, रहेछ follows the -एको form, as in सुतिरहेका रहेछन् (they were sleeping, I now see). It also comes after the -ने form for habits and plans.

You do not use it for something you knew all along. Your own name or your own age are not a surprise to you, so you normally say म नेपाली हुँ, not म नेपाली रहेछु.

The ending changes with the subject, as other forms of the verb do: रहेछु for म, रहेछौ for तिमी, रहेछ for ऊ (रहिछे for a woman), रहेछन् for उनी or several people (रहिछिन् for one woman shown mid respect).

Examples (5)

  1. यो चिया त धेरै मीठो रहेछ!

This tea is really sweet, I see!

रहेछ shows the speaker has just tasted it.

  2. मन्दिर यहाँबाट टाढा रहेछ।

The temple turns out to be far from here.

    रहेछ replaces छ.

  3. उनी तिम्री दिदी रहिछिन्।

So she is your older sister!

A woman shown mid respect takes रहिछिन्.

  4. पसल बन्द रहेछ।

The shop is closed, I see.

The speaker has just walked up to it.

  5. बच्चाहरू त घरमै सुतिरहेका रहेछन्।

The children are asleep at home, I see.

रहेछन् follows the -एका form for plural people.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting छ before रहेछ.

    यो चिया धेरै मीठो छ रहेछ।
    यो चिया धेरै मीठो रहेछ।

रहेछ takes the place of छ, so the two are not used together.
