प्रति
Toward a Person or Idea
प्रति follows the noun and shows the person or idea that a feeling or duty is aimed at.
How It Works
The word प्रति has two jobs.
First, it points to the target of a feeling or duty. It is usually joined to the noun before it: आमाबुबाप्रति आदर (respect toward parents), कामप्रति इमानदार (honest toward the work), स्वयंसेवकप्रति धन्यवाद (thanks to the volunteers).
Second, it means per when it comes at the front of a word, joined as in प्रतिशत or separate as in प्रति किलो: प्रतिशत (percent), प्रतिव्यक्ति (per person), प्रतिदिन (per day).
| Use | Position | Example |
|---|---|---|
| toward | after the noun | देशप्रति माया |
| per | before the word | प्रतिव्यक्ति |
It is a formal word, found in letters, news and speeches. In speech, people say लाई or को लागि.
