को रूपमा

को रूपमा names the role, use or job someone or something has.

How It Works

This two-word postposition tells what role a person or thing plays. The first part, को, joins the noun. The second part, रूपमा, is a separate word: शिक्षकको रूपमा.

It fits jobs (शिक्षकको रूपमा काम गर्नु), gifts (उपहारको रूपमा दिनु), and what something is known as (पर्यटकीय सहरको रूपमा चिनिनु).

It is the plain Nepali for as. Compare जस्तो, which means like: शिक्षक जस्तो (like a teacher). Use को रूपमा when the person really is in that role.

The phrase has no plural form and no ending for gender. Only the noun before it can change: शिक्षकहरूको रूपमा (as teachers).

  2. तिहार उज्यालोको चाडको रूपमा मनाइन्छ।

    Tihar is celebrated as a festival of lights.

    The passive मनाइन्छ is often used here.

  3. उपहारको रूपमा उनले मलाई किताब दिइन्।

    As a gift, she gave me a book.

    उपहारको रूपमा names what the book is.

  4. पोखरा पर्यटकीय सहरको रूपमा चिनिन्छ।

    Pokhara is known as a tourist city.

    चिनिन्छ is the passive of चिन्नु.

  5. यो फोटो नमुनाको रूपमा राखिएको छ।

    This photo has been kept as a sample.

    नमुनाको रूपमा names the use.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving out को before रूपमा.

    उनी शिक्षक रूपमा काम गर्छिन्।
    उनी शिक्षकको रूपमा काम गर्छिन्।

    रूपमा needs को before it.
