मेरा ... छन्

Saying You Have Family

Level 1Sounds Like mērā du'ī janā bhā'i chan

Saying who is in your family combines my, a count and the verb छ.

How It Works

Use this sentence to say how many relatives you have.

How manyPatternExample
more than oneमेरा ... जना ... छन्मेरा दुई जना भाइ छन्।
one boy or manमेरो एउटा ... छमेरो एउटा भाइ छ।
one girl or womanमेरी एउटी ... छिन्मेरी एउटी बहिनी छिन्।

With more than one relative, the word for my ends in -ा, जना counts people, and the verb is छन्. For one person the verb follows the person: छ for a boy or man, and छिन् for a girl or woman. The plain छे is also heard for a younger sister. For a parent or an older brother or sister, the polite हुनुहुन्छ is also common: मेरो एउटा दाइ हुनुहुन्छ.

To ask, use कति जना: तपाईंका कति जना भाइबहिनी छन्? means how many brothers and sisters do you have?

Family words you can use are दाइ (older brother), दिदी (older sister), भाइ (younger brother) and बहिनी (younger sister).
