मेरो / हाम्रो

My and Our

Level 1Sounds Like mērō ra hāmrō

My and our end in -ो, -ा or -ी depending on the noun after them.

How It Works

The word for my is मेरो, and the word for our is हाम्रो. Their endings change with the noun that follows.

Noun after itMyOur
one thingमेरो घरहाम्रो घर
more than oneमेरा साथीहरूहाम्रा साथीहरू
one girl or womanमेरी आमाहाम्री बहिनी

The ending follows that noun, so a man says मेरी बहिनी and a woman says मेरो भाइ.

The -ी form is for female people and animals. Things such as a house or a book never take it. In everyday speech many people say मेरो आमा, but writing prefers मेरी आमा, so this course teaches the -ी form.

Respected people can take the plural ending: मेरा बुबा (my father) is common.

Examples (5)

Several friends, so the ending is -ा.

  3. मेरी आमा शिक्षक हुनुहुन्छ।

    मेरा साथीहरू यहाँ छन्।

In writing and careful speech, more than one friend takes -ा.

  • Using the plural ending for one house.

    मेरा घर पोखरामा छ।
    मेरो घर पोखरामा छ।

    One house takes -ो.
