Here and There

यहाँ means here and त्यहाँ means there.

How It Works

These two words name places, just as यो and त्यो name things.

The word usually sits right before the verb or after the thing it describes: बैंक त्यहाँ छ means the bank is there. With a verb of motion, the place comes before it: हामी त्यहाँ जान्छौँ.

Add a marker to say more: यहाँबाट (from here) and त्यहाँबाट (from there). The markers are joined to the word. You do not need मा: यहाँ already means in this place, so say म यहाँ बस्छु.

Please come here is तपाईं यहाँ आउनुहोस्. Remember the chandrabindu: यहाँ and त्यहाँ, never यहा or त्यहा.

    My house is here.

    यहाँ names a place close to the speaker.

  2. बैंक त्यहाँ छ।

    The bank is there.

    त्यहाँ names a place farther away.

  3. म यहाँ बस्छु।

    I live here.

    यहाँ already means in this place, so it takes no मा.

  4. हामी त्यहाँ जान्छौँ।

    We go there.

    The place comes before the verb जान्छौँ.

  5. तपाईं यहाँ आउनुहोस्।

    Please come here.

    आउनुहोस् is the polite request for a person to come.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving out the chandrabindu.

    मेरो घर यहा छ।
    मेरो घर यहाँ छ।

    The word is written with a chandrabindu: यहाँ, not यहा.
