गरी / भई
The Written -ई Form
गरी and भई are the written forms of गरेर and भएर: उनीहरूले योजना बनाई काम सुरु गरे.
How It Works
The -ई form is the written twin of -एर. It joins an earlier action to a later one and it never changes for person, number or gender. The person ending belongs to the last verb only.
| Speech | Writing |
|---|---|
| गरेर | गरी |
| भएर | भई |
| लेखेर | लेखी |
| पकाएर | पकाई |
The sentences read in the same order as with -एर: first the earlier action, then the later one. उनले चिठी लेखी पठाइन् means she wrote a letter and sent it. A news report may say बैठक भई निर्णय गरियो, a meeting was held and a decision was made.
In speech, -एर is the usual choice. The -ई form is most at home in notices, reports, letters and stories. You will also meet it in set phrases such as गरी (by doing) and भई (having become).
