Saying Not Yet

Level 3Sounds Like ēkō chaina

-एको छैन shows something has not happened, as far as now.

How It Works

For a perfect sentence, the negative is a single word change: छ becomes छैन. मैले खाएको छु (I have eaten) becomes मैले खाएको छैन (I have not eaten).

DoerForm
म (man)आएको छैन

The word अझै makes the sense of not yet clear: बस अझै आइपुगेको छैन (the bus has not arrived yet). With कहिल्यै it means never up to now: म कहिल्यै इलाम गएको छैन (I have never been to Ilam).

The simple past negative looks back at one time: मैले खाइनँ (I did not eat). The perfect negative is about now. If your friend asks whether you have eaten and you have not, say

Examples (5)

अझै and छैन show that it has not happened so far.

I have never been to Ilam.

कहिल्यै turns it into never until now.

The participle -एको goes with a single thing.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the present negative for not yet.

खाँदिनँ means I do not eat, as a habit. Not yet needs -एको छैन.

  • Not agreeing with several doers.

-एको becomes -एका when the doers are several.
