बक्सनु

Honorific Verb for High Respect

Level 6Sounds Like baksanu

बक्सनु means to grant, used for people of high rank: माफ बक्सनुहोस् is please forgive me.

How It Works

बक्सनु is an honorific verb. It lifts the giver far above the receiver: a teacher blesses a student, a king grants a prize, and a speaker asks the listener for forgiveness.

PhraseMeaning
माफ बक्सनुहोस्please forgive me
क्षमा बक्सनुहोस्please pardon us
आशीर्वाद बक्सनुभयोgave a blessing

The verb takes the same honorific endings as other verbs: -नुहोस् for a request, -नुभयो for the past. The giver is the respected person, and the receiver is the one who gains.

माफ बक्सनुहोस् is a very formal apology. For a plain apology in daily life, use माफ गर्नुहोस्. In shops and cafes, use दिनुहोस् for give, not बक्सनुहोस्.

Older court texts also use बक्सियोस् for a request to a king: महाराज, हामीलाई केही जमिन बक्सियोस्. You meet it mostly in history and in very formal speech.

Common Mistakes

  • Learners use बक्सनु about their own actions.

    म तपाईंलाई माफ बक्सन्छु।
    म तपाईंलाई माफ गर्छु।

An honorific verb is normally kept for the other person's action, not your own. Say माफ गर्छु for I forgive.
