-ज्यू

Respectful -ज्यू

Level 5Sounds Like jyū

-ज्यू after a title or kinship word adds respect: गुरुज्यू is a respected teacher, and आमाज्यू is a respected mother.

How It Works

-ज्यू is a respect ending. It joins the title or kinship word and writes as one word: गुरुज्यू, आमाज्यू.

WordWith -ज्यू
गुरु (teacher)गुरुज्यू
आमा (mother)आमाज्यू

A person called with -ज्यू is treated as someone to honor, so the verb uses the polite ending: गुरुज्यूले सिकाउनुभयो, आमाज्यू हुनुहुन्छ. Use the polite ending, not plain -छ or -यो.

You can call a teacher by the word alone: गुरुज्यू, नमस्ते. You can also speak about them: गुरुज्यूले हामीलाई सिकाउनुभयो. The ending stays on the word in both cases.

Use -ज्यू with the few titles and kinship words you hear it with. Names can take it too (रामज्यू), but -जी is the more common ending for names (सरिताजी).
