Except and Besides
बाहेक leaves out one thing, or adds another.
How It Works
बाहेक has two senses that depend on the sentence.
| Sense | Example |
|---|---|
With a negative it means nothing but: (I need nothing but tea).
बाहेक joins a plain noun, as in रामबाहेक. After a word with को or का, it stays separate: उनको बाहेक. This is the same rule as for other one-word postpositions.
Do not mix it up with बिना, which means without: रामबिना हामी जाँदैनौँ (we will not go without Ram). In the except sense, बाहेक takes one thing out of a group, and the rest of the sentence stays as it is.
