बिना

Without Something

Level 2Sounds Like binā

Noun + बिना means without it.

How It Works

In this course बिना is written as one word with the noun before it: चिनीबिना, नुनबिना, छाताबिना, फोनबिना.

NounWith बिना
चिनीचिनीबिना
नुननुनबिना
छाताछाताबिना

It comes before the verb, like most small words. म चिनीबिना चिया पिउँछु is the plain way to say I drink tea without sugar.

You can also use it for people: तिमीबिना म जाँदिनँ (I will not go without you).

Compare बिना with सँग. सँग means with, and बिना means without. Both go with the noun, and both come before the verb. बिना does not make the verb negative: म चिनीबिना चिया पिउँछु has a positive verb. The verb is negative only when the whole idea is: तिमीबिना म जाँदिनँ.

Examples (5)

  1. म चिनीबिना चिया पिउँछु।

    I drink tea without sugar.

    बिना joins चिनी.

  2. उनी छाताबिना बाहिर गइन्।

She went outside without an umbrella.

The past verb is -इन् for a woman.

  3. म नुनबिना खाना खान सक्दिनँ।

I cannot eat food without salt.

    बिना works with -न सक्नु.

  4. तिमीबिना म जाँदिनँ।

    बिना also follows a pronoun.

  5. ऊ जुत्ताबिना हिँड्यो।

    बिना joins जुत्ता.

Common Mistakes

  • Making the verb negative because English says without.

    म चिनीबिना चिया पिउँदिनँ।
    म चिनीबिना चिया पिउँछु।

बिना already says without, so the verb stays positive. The first sentence means I do not drink tea without sugar.
