How It Works

Name two items. Put केवळ before the first and नव्हे, तर before the second. केवळ आजच नव्हे, तर उद्या देखील शाळा बंद राहील. (School will stay closed not only today but tomorrow too.)

The first item usually takes -च: केवळ आजच, केवळ पुण्यातच. The two items take the same ending. केवळ शिक्षकांनीच नव्हे, तर पालकांनी देखील मुलांकडे लक्ष द्यावे. (Not only teachers but parents too should pay attention to the children.)

देखील can be replaced by -ही or सुद्धा: तर उद्याही शाळा बंद राहील. All three mean "also" or "too", and देखील is the most formal.

Use नव्हे to rule out a noun or a phrase. नाही negates a verb, so केवळ आज नाही is wrong here. The words केवळ and नव्हे usually come together as a pair. केवळ can be left out when the first item has -च: आजच नव्हे, तर उद्याही.

The pattern suits essays, news and speeches, where a writer wants to widen a point.

    Both items take -साठी.

  4. केवळ अभ्यासच नव्हे, तर खेळ देखील महत्त्वाचा आहे.

    Not only study but also sport is important.

    देखील follows the second item.

  5. केवळ शिक्षकांनीच नव्हे, तर पालकांनी देखील मुलांकडे लक्ष द्यावे.

    Not only teachers but parents too should pay attention to the children.

    Both groups take -नी.

Common Mistakes

  • Using नाही in the place of नव्हे.

    केवळ आज नाही, तर उद्या देखील शाळा बंद राहील.
    केवळ आजच नव्हे, तर उद्या देखील शाळा बंद राहील.

    The pair uses नव्हे with nouns and phrases. नाही negates verbs.

  • Using the Hindi pair बल्कि.

    केवळ आजच नव्हे, बल्कि उद्या देखील शाळा बंद राहील.
    केवळ आजच नव्हे, तर उद्या देखील शाळा बंद राहील.

    बल्कि is Hindi. Marathi says तर.
