How It Works

WordMeaningExample
इकडेthis way, over hereइकडे या.
तिकडेthat way, over thereतिकडे बघा.
उजवीकडेto the rightउजवीकडे वळा.
डावीकडेto the leftडावीकडे बँक आहे.
सरळstraightसरळ जा.

The same word can say where something is (डावीकडे बँक आहे) or where to go (डावीकडे वळा).

Directions to a stranger use the -ा form of the command: वळा (turn), जा (go), या (come). To a friend, use the bare stem: वळ, जा, ये.

Add मग (then) to put the steps in order: सरळ जा, मग डावीकडे वळा.

इकडे and तिकडे also tell a side or a direction where something happens: तो तिकडे राहतो (he lives over there). इथे and तिथे name a fixed spot.

To ask for directions, start with the place: बँक कुठे आहे? The answer is a chain of these words: सरळ जा आणि उजवीकडे वळा.
