-ैत रहब

Keeping on Doing

Level 4Sounds Like ̔aita rahaba

-ैत plus रहब means to keep on doing something without stopping.

How It Works

Take the -ैत form (चलैत, पढ़ैत, सुनैत) and follow it with a form of रहब. The first word stays the same; only रहब changes.

UseFormExample
Habit or fact-ैत रहैत अछि / रहैत छीचलैत रहैत अछि
Went on (plain)-ैत रहलहोइत रहल
Went on (I)-ैत रहलहुँपढ़ैत रहलहुँ
Polite request-ैत रहूसुनैत रहू

The form with रहैत says something repeats or never quite stops, as in ई हल्ला चलैत रहैत अछि. The past form with रहल says it went on for a stretch, as in बरखा साँझ धरि होइत रहल. Do not mix this up with पढ़ि रहल छी, which means "I am reading right now". The -ैत रहब pattern is about continuing, not about this moment.

Examples (5)

  1. ई हल्ला दिन भरि चलैत रहैत अछि।

This noise keeps going all day.

चलैत रहैत अछि shows a sound that does not stop.

  2. हम राति भरि पढ़ैत रहलहुँ।

    I kept reading all night.

पढ़ैत रहलहुँ is the past form for "I".

  3. बरखा साँझ धरि होइत रहल।

The rain kept falling until evening.

होइत रहल uses the plain past रहल for a thing.

  4. अहाँ बजैत रहू, हम सुनि रहल छी।

    Keep talking, I am listening.

रहू turns the pattern into a polite request.

  5. दादी भरि दिन माला जपैत रहैत छथि।

Grandma keeps telling her beads all day long.

रहैत छथि uses the respectful verb for Grandma.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the Hindi -ता form for the first verb.

    ई हल्ला दिन भरि चलता रहैत अछि।
    ई हल्ला दिन भरि चलैत रहैत अछि।

The first verb takes -ैत: चलैत, never the Hindi चलता.
