освен ако не
Unless
Освен ако не means unless: Ќе дојдам, освен ако не врне. (I will come unless it rains.) Follow it with a present verb.
How It Works
How it is built. Освен means "except" and ако means "if", so the phrase says "except if". The main clause says what will normally happen, and the освен ако не clause gives the exception:
- Ќе дојдам, освен ако не врне. (I will come unless it rains.)
- Автобусот тргнува во осум, освен ако не доцни. (The bus leaves at eight unless it is late.)
The не is part of the phrase. To find the meaning, read the clause without не: in освен ако не врне, the exception is rain. Compare Ќе дојдам ако не врне (I will come if it does not rain), which says nearly the same thing from the other side. You will also see освен ако without не, with the same meaning: освен ако се случи чудо (unless a miracle happens).
Verb forms. Use a present verb, even for the future. A perfective verb is fine here, just as after ако: Ќе завршиме до петок, освен ако не се случи нешто неочекувано. Short pronouns stand right before the verb: освен ако не ти се јавам прво.
Order. The освен ако не clause usually comes after the main clause, often after a comma. It can also come first, followed by a comma: Освен ако не се случи нешто, ќе се видиме утре.
Освен or освен ако не? Before a noun or a pronoun, освен alone means "except": Сите дојдоа освен Марко. Before a clause with a verb, use освен ако, usually with не. In formal texts it often appears in fixed phrases such as освен ако не е поинаку наведено (unless otherwise stated). A formal word for "if" is доколку.

Common Mistakes
Using освен alone before a clause.
Ќе дојдам, освен врне.Ќе дојдам, освен ако не врне.Освен alone comes before a noun or a pronoun (освен Марко). Before a clause with a verb, add ако: освен ако не врне.
Using ако when you mean "unless".
Ќе излеземе ако врне. (meaning: We will go out unless it rains.)Ќе излеземе, освен ако не врне.Ако врне means "if it rains", which is the opposite plan. To make rain the exception, use освен ако не.
