The Marks on Ѐ and Ѝ

Level 1

сѐ = everything, се = oneself or they are. нѐ = us, не = not. ѝ = to her, и = and.

How It Works

сѐ means everything: Благодарам за сѐ. (Thanks for everything.) It is also part of сѐ уште (still); see already and still. Without the mark, се is the little word in се викам (my name is) or the verb in тие се (they are).

нѐ means us: Тие нѐ видоа. (They saw us.) Without the mark, не means not: Тие не видоа. (They did not see.)

ѝ means to her: Кажи ѝ. (Tell her.) Without the mark, и means and.

The mark does not show stress; stress has its own rule. See stress. You will meet нѐ and ѝ again with the short object pronouns and the short to-someone pronouns.

    Сѐ with the mark means everything.

  2. Тие нѐ видоа во паркот.

    They saw us in the park.

    Нѐ with the mark means us.

  3. Тие не дојдоа.

    They did not come.

    Не without the mark means not.

  4. Кажи ѝ здраво од мене.

    Say hello to her from me.

  5. Ана и Марко се тука.

    Ana and Marko are here.

    Here и means and and се means are, so neither has a mark.

  6. Сѐ е во ред.

    Everything is fine.

    Сѐ starts the sentence and still keeps its mark.

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving the mark off нѐ when you mean us.

    Тие не видоа во паркот.
    Тие нѐ видоа во паркот.

    You meant They saw us in the park. Without the mark, не means not, so the sentence says They did not see in the park.

  • Writing се when you mean everything.

    Благодарам за се.
    Благодарам за сѐ.

    Everything is сѐ, with the mark. Се alone is a different word.

  • Putting a mark on и when it means and.

    Ана ѝ Марко се тука.
    Ана и Марко се тука.

    Only the pronoun ѝ (to her) has the mark. The word for and is always и.
