колку е часот

Telling the Time

Level 2Sounds Like kolku e časot

Колку е часот? — Часот е три. Say пет и петнаесет for 5:15, седум и пол for 7:30 and шест без десет for 5:50.

How It Works

Asking and answering: Колку е часот? (What time is it?) The answer can be Часот е три. or Сега е три часот. In relaxed speech you will also hear Колку е саатот?, with the colloquial loanword саат.

Minutes:

  • after the hour, use и: пет и десет (5:10), пет и петнаесет or пет и четвртина (5:15)
  • half past, use и пол: пет и пол (5:30)
  • before the next hour, use без: шест без петнаесет or шест без четвртина (5:45), шест без десет (5:50)

With без, the hour you name is the next one, so шест без десет is ten to six. In everyday speech you may also hear петнаесет до шест for the same time.

At a time: use во with the hour and часот: Состанокот е во пет часот. With minutes, часот is usually left out: Возот тргнува во седум и пол. Timetables and shop hours use the 24-hour clock: во дваесет и два часот (at 10 p.m.). For a range, use од ... до: од девет до пет. For a rough time, use околу: околу пет часот (see бројни изрази: над; околу; до).

часот or часа? пет часот is a time on the clock (five o'clock), while пет часа is an amount of time (five hours), with the count form from бројна множина: два дена; три часа.
