Fractions
половина (a half), третина (a third) and четвртина (a quarter) are feminine nouns: половина леб (half a loaf of bread), третина од студентите (a third of the students).
How It Works
The forms. половина (1/2), третина (1/3), четвртина (1/4), петтина (1/5). Most are built from the ordinal numbers with -ина: трет → третина, петти → петтина.
Feminine nouns. Like other feminine nouns in -а, they take една, the plural -и and the article -та: една третина, две третини, три четвртини, половината.
An amount of something. Put the noun straight after the fraction, just as in amounts and containers: половина леб, половина час (half an hour). In everyday speech, the short word пола is very common and never changes: пола леб, пола час.
Part of a whole. Use од with a definite noun: половина од платата (half of the salary), третина од студентите (a third of the students). The fraction can also take the article: половината од парите (half of the money).

Од with a definite noun means part of a known group.

Четвртина is feminine, so it takes една.
- Завршивме три четвртини од работата.
We've finished three quarters of the work.
The plural of четвртина is четвртини.
- Половина од платата ми оди за станарина.
Half of my salary goes on rent.
- Чекав половина час.
I waited half an hour.
Common Mistakes
Treating a fraction as masculine.
Еден третина од студентите се од Охрид.Една третина од студентите се од Охрид.Третина ends in -а and is a feminine noun, so it takes една.
Leaving the fraction in the singular after a number above one.
Завршивме три четвртина од работата.Завршивме три четвртини од работата.After три, a feminine noun takes its plural: четвртини, третини.
