Saying When

Level 1Sounds Like sega; denes; utre; včera

сега now · денес today · утре tomorrow · вчера yesterday · секој ден every day. Use them on their own: Утре одам на работа.

How It Works

The words.

  • сега now
  • денес today
  • утре tomorrow
  • вчера yesterday
  • секој ден every day

No preposition. Say Утре одам, never во утре.

Word order is flexible. Утре одам на работа and Одам на работа утре are both natural. Starting with the time word is very common.

Present for plans. Утре одам во Охрид uses the present tense for a planned event, just like English I am going tomorrow. See The Present for Planned Events.

Yesterday needs a past verb. With вчера, the verb is in a past form: Вчера беше недела. (Yesterday was Sunday.) You will learn беше in Past Forms of Be.

Days of the week work a little differently: they take во (Days of the Week). For words like often and always, see Describing Habits.

Common Mistakes

  • Adding a preposition before a time word.

    Во утре одам на работа.
    Утре одам на работа.

Утре already means on the next day, so it stands alone.

  • Using the Serbian word for today.

    Данас сум дома.
    Денес сум дома.

Данас is Serbian. The Macedonian word is денес.
