еден / една / едно

One and a

Level 1Sounds Like eden; edna; edno

The word for one changes with the noun: еден брат, една сестра, едно дете.

How It Works

Match the noun.

  • Masculine: еден брат (one brother), еден град
  • Feminine: една сестра (one sister), една куќа
  • Neuter: едно дете (one child), едно кафе

When you simply count out loud, use еден: еден, два, три.

Like English a. Macedonian has no required word for a. A bare noun is usually enough: Тоа е книга. (That is a book.) Имам куче. (I have a dog.)

Speakers add еден, една or едно when they introduce someone or something new, or describe it: Еден човек те бара. (A man is looking for you.) Тоа е еден стар град. (It is an old city.)

Not with the article. Еден means a, and the article means the, so they do not go together: една книга or книгата. See The Definite Article.

For two and more, see Numbers One to Ten.

Examples (6)

  1. Имам една сестра.

    I have one sister.

Сестра is feminine, so it takes една.

  2. Тоа е еден стар град.

    It is an old city.

  3. Едно кафе, ве молам.

    One coffee, please.

Кафе is neuter, so it takes едно.

  4. Имам еден брат и две сестри.

I have one brother and two sisters.

  5. Еден човек те бара.

A man is looking for you.

Еден introduces someone new, like English a.

  6. Тоа е книга.

    That is a book.

No word for a is needed here.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the masculine form with a feminine noun.

    Имам еден куќа.
    Имам една куќа.

Куќа is feminine, so the form is една.

  • Using the feminine form with a neuter noun in -е.

    Една кафе, ве молам.
    Едно кафе, ве молам.

Кафе is neuter, so the form is едно.

  • Using one and the article together.

    Тоа е една книгата.
    Тоа е една книга.

Една means a, so the noun stays without the article.
