Numbers Above Ten
To count past ten, use -наесет for 11–19 (петнаесет), then the tens (дваесет, триесет), and put и before the last part: дваесет и еден (21).
How It Works
11 to 19: add -наесет to the unit: единаесет, дванаесет, тринаесет, четиринаесет, петнаесет, шеснаесет, седумнаесет, осумнаесет, деветнаесет. Then comes дваесет (20).
The tens: дваесет (20), триесет (30), четириесет (40), педесет (50), шеесет (60), седумдесет (70), осумдесет (80), деведесет (90).
Hundreds and thousands: сто (100), двесте (200), триста (300), and from 400 on the ending -стотини: четиристотини, петстотини, шестотини, седумстотини, осумстотини, деветстотини. A thousand is just илјада, with no еден in front; then две илјади, пет илјади. A million is милион.
Joining with и: the parts are written as separate words, and и (and) goes only before the last one:
- дваесет и еден — 21
- сто и пет — 105
- сто седумдесет и четири — 174
- илјада двесте шеесет и шест — 1266
Gender at the end: if the number ends in one or two, that last part agrees with the noun just as in броеви од еден до десет: дваесет и еден ден, дваесет и една година, дваесет и две жени. After a final еден/една/едно the noun stays singular. Masculine nouns for things take their count form after any number: дваесет и два дена (see бројна множина: два дена; три часа). Groups of men are counted with двајца; тројца; петмина.
Spelling to watch: шеснаесет (16) and шеесет (60) lose sounds from шест; 50 is педесет, not петдесет; and 200 is двесте, not двеста.
