Inverted Word Order in Literature

Level 6Sounds Like kniževna inverziǰa

In everyday speech, a known subject usually comes first: Тој замина без збор. A writer can turn it around, Замина тој без збор, to slow the sentence down and put the weight on the action.

How It Works

Everyday order. The neutral order is subject, verb, object (see basic word order). Putting the verb first is also normal in speech when the subject is new: Дојде Марко. (Marko came.) See verb before the subject.

What literature adds. Writers change the order even when nothing is new, to create rhythm, to slow the reader down or to highlight a word:

  • Verb before a known subject: Замина тој без збор. The pronoun near the end sounds heavy and final.
  • The describing word first: Тешки беа тие години. (Those were hard years.) The adjective carries the weight.
  • Time or place first, subject last: Цела ноќ пееше ветерот низ гранките. (All night the wind sang through the branches.)
  • Describing words after the noun: Паѓаше снегот, тивок и бел. (The snow was falling, quiet and white.) See adjectives after the noun in poetry.

What does not move. Short pronouns and не still stand right before a verb that shows the person, exactly as in any standard sentence (see the order before the verb): Долго го чекаше таа на пристаништето. (She waited for him a long time at the harbour.)

Use it for effect. In conversation these orders sound poetic or dramatic. Learn to recognize them in books and songs, and use them in your own writing when you want a special tone.

Examples (5)

The verb comes first, and the known subject follows.

  2. Паѓаше снегот, тивок и бел.

The snow was falling, quiet and white.

Word by Word: Was-falling snow-the, quiet and white.

The describing words come after the noun.

  5. Долго го чекаше таа на пристаништето.

She waited for him a long time at the harbour.

Го still stands right before the verb.

Common Mistakes

  • Moving a short pronoun after the verb to sound poetic.

    Чекаше го таа цела ноќ.
    Го чекаше таа цела ноќ.

Inversion moves whole words and phrases. A short pronoun still comes right before a verb that shows the person; it follows only commands and the verbal adverb.
