да for Wishes

Wishes with Да

Level 4Sounds Like da za želbi: da si živ i zdrav

Да + a present verb, said as an exclamation, is a wish: Да си жив и здрав! (Stay alive and well!)

How It Works

The pattern. Да + present verb, said with the voice of an exclamation. No verb like "I wish" is needed, because да carries the wish by itself.

  • Да си жив и здрав! said to a man, often as a warm thank-you.
  • Да си жива и здрава! said to a woman, and Да сте живи и здрави! to several people.
  • Да ви е честито! Congratulations! (for a wedding, a baby or a new home)
  • Да ти е со среќа! Good luck with it! (for something new, such as a job or a car)
  • Да се видиме на весело! May we next meet at a happy occasion!

Short pronouns. Ми, ти, му, ѝ, ни, ви, им go between да and the verb: да ви е, да ти е. See the order before the verb.

Negative wishes. Put не right after да: Да не ти се случи! (May it never happen to you!) Said to someone who is about to do something, да не with a perfective verb is a warning: Да не паднеш! (Careful, don't fall!)

The same form has other jobs. Spoken calmly to ти or Вие, a да-clause is a soft request: Да ми се јавиш кога ќе стигнеш. (Give me a call when you arrive.) With "we", it suggests doing something together, like ајде да: Да одиме! (Let's go!) The situation and the voice tell you which meaning is meant.

Other ways to wish. For he, she or they, нека also expresses a wish: Нека ви е со среќа! For a wish about the past that can no longer come true, use да with the imperfect: see да + имперфект.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting the short pronoun before да.

    Ви да е честито!
    Да ви е честито!

Да comes first, then the short pronoun, then the verb: да ви е.

  • Leaving the adjective in the masculine when talking to a woman.

Да си жив и здрав, Ана!
Да си жива и здрава, Ана!

The adjectives agree with the person you wish well: жива и здрава for a woman.
