нека + Present Tense

Letting Someone Act

Level 3Sounds Like neka + segašno vreme

Нека + a present verb means "let (someone) do something": Нека дојде. (Let him come. / He can come.) It also makes wishes: Нека биде така. (So be it.)

How It Works

A command such as дојди! speaks to you (see заповеден начин: читај; носи; пиј). To say what someone else should or may do, use нека with the present tense.

What нека can express:

  • Permission: Нека дојде утре. — He can come tomorrow.
  • A mild instruction: Нека почека малку. — She should wait a little.
  • Letting something happen: Остави го, нека работи. — Leave him alone, let him work.
  • Wishes and set phrases: Нека биде така. — So be it. Нека ти е со среќа! — Good luck with it! (for a new home, car or job)

Word order: short pronouns and се sit between нека and the verb: Нека ми се јави. (Tell him to call me.) For the negative, put не right after нека: Нека не доцни.

Which aspect? Both work. A perfective verb names one event: Нека дојде. An imperfective verb names an activity or a habit: Нека доаѓа кога сака. (He can come whenever he likes.)

Нека, ајде да and да: for "let's" (you and I together) use ајде да. Some speakers also use нека with I (нека видам, let me see), but others do not, so да видам is the safer choice. A wish with да alone is covered in да за желби: да си жив и здрав. Unlike in Bulgarian, нека is not followed by да.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the command form after нека.

    Нека дојди.
    Нека дојде.

Дојди is a command to "you". After нека, use the present form for the person you mean: дојде for he or she.

  • Adding да after нека.

    Нека да дојде.
    Нека дојде.

Standard Macedonian does not put да after нека. Use нека directly with the verb.

  • Putting the short pronoun after the verb.

    Нека каже ми.
    Нека ми каже.

Short pronouns go before a present verb, so they sit between нека and the verb.
