What Comes Before the Verb
The word that carries the new or most important information goes right before the verb.
How It Works
| Question | Answer: the focus word is before the verb |
|---|---|
| წერილი ვინ დაწერა? (Who wrote the letter?) | წერილი ნინომ დაწერა. |
| ნინომ რა დაწერა? (What did Nino write?) | ნინომ წერილი დაწერა. |
| ნინო როდის მოვა? (When is Nino coming?) | ნინო ხვალ მოვა. |
It is the same spot that question words take. When you answer, the new word moves into the place where the question word was.
Use it for contrast too: ხინკალი თბილისში ვჭამე, არა ბათუმში (I ate khinkali in Tbilisi, not in Batumi).
არ, ვერ and ნუ stay right next to the verb, so the focus word goes before them: წერილი ნინომ არ დაწერა (Nino didn't write the letter).
English often shows focus with a louder voice or with it was ... who. Georgian shows it with word order.
Examples (5)
- — წერილი ვინ დაწერა? — წერილი ნინომ დაწერა.
"Who wrote the letter?" "Nino wrote it."
The new information, ნინომ, is right before the verb.
- — რა იყიდე? — ხილი ვიყიდე.
"What did you buy?" "I bought fruit."
ხილი answers რა, so it takes its place.
- ხინკალი თბილისში ვჭამე, არა ბათუმში.
I ate khinkali in Tbilisi, not in Batumi.
A contrast in the focus spot.
- ნინო ხვალ მოვა, ლუკა კი ზეგ.
Nino is coming tomorrow, and Luka the day after.
The times are in focus.
- — მატარებელი როდის მოდის? — მატარებელი ათ საათზე მოდის.
"When does the train come?" "The train comes at ten."
The time answers როდის.
