კი (As For)
As for
კი after a word contrasts it with something said before, like and or but.
How It Works
- ნინო თბილისშია, ლუკა კი (k'i) ბათუმში. (Nino is in Tbilisi, and Luka is in Batumi.)
- მე ყავა მინდა, ნინოს კი ჩაი. (I want coffee, and Nino wants tea.)
The word before კი keeps the case its own verb needs. In the second example, ნინოს is in the dative, because მინდა (want) puts the person in the dative.
One spelling, two meanings: კი alone at the start of an answer means yes (— მოხვალ? — კი.). After a word, in the middle of a sentence, it means as for.
It is common in stories that compare people: დედამ სადილი მოამზადა, მამამ კი სუფრა გაშალა (Mom cooked lunch, and Dad set the table).
Never put this კი first in its part of the sentence.

The verb is not repeated.
- გიორგიმ ხინკალი შეუკვეთა, ანამ კი ხაჭაპური.

ანამ is in the ergative, like გიორგიმ.
- დღეს მზეა, ხვალ კი იწვიმებს.
It's sunny today, but tomorrow it will rain.
Two days compared.

კი comes right after მისი და.

We left, but they stayed.
