ვითომ
Supposedly
ვითომ marks something as only claimed or pretended: supposedly, as if.
How It Works
ვითომ (vitom) adds the speaker's doubt. What follows is said or shown, but the speaker does not believe it.
| Use | Example |
|---|---|
| pretending | ვითომ არაფერი იცის. (He acts as if he knows nothing.) |
| a claim you doubt | ვითომ დღეს მოვა. (He's supposedly coming today.) |
| a doubtful reply | ვითომ? (Oh, really?) |
The verb keeps its normal tense, because ვითომ only adds the doubt.
Three words are easy to mix up:
- თურმე (apparently): news you accept as true;
- თითქოს (as if): how something looks or feels, with no doubt about anyone;
- ვითომ (supposedly): what someone says or acts out, and you doubt it.
ვითომ is common in conversation and in stories. It often comes with მაგრამ and the truth: ვითომ ავად არის, მაგრამ ... (he's supposedly sick, but ...).
